The society supports its members through an internationally recognized conference every two years. We have active local groups that allow members to get together on a regular basis, to discuss current issues in metrology and to expose the members to new technologies and methodologies. MSA emails out regular newsletters and is affiliated with relevant bodies both internationally and domestically. The society also represents the interests of its members in policy formalisation and actively promotes training of metrologists, including being a key developer of a graduate course in measurement science.
MSA and the Measurement Community
The metrology community is connected by a shared endeavor to provide measurement services and improve methods and capabilities to support science, education and industry. The MSA provides conferences + events for those metrologists to share ideas, discuss challenges and establish relationships with colleagues that are professionally and socially rewarding.
Publicly Available Test Methods
The MSA is a unique platform for measurement experts across all levels of industry, from national laboratories through to end users, to come together and exchange ideas and share experiences. Where gaps are identified, such as lack of available training information or testing methods, the MSA is able to draw on the knowledge from its members to create and publish helpful documents.
The MSA also has published test methods that have been developed and endorsed by members of the society and reviewed by experts in the relative fields. Current test methods can be found here:
Calibration of Pressure Calibrators, Indicators and Transducers (2008)
This Test Method describes test procedures for the calibration of pressure calibrators, indicators, transducers and transmitters. It is intended that this document be referenced instead of in-house developed test methods.
Calibration of Mechanical Pressure Gauges (2022)
This is a Test Method for the calibration of pressure gauges. It is intended that this document be referenced instead of the Australian Standard AS1349-1986 for the testing of mechanical pressure gauges.
The MSA is working to develop a series of technical guides that will be helpful educational tools for members and the broader measurement community. This is part of the MSA’s Education Initiative that began in 2017. The MSA education initiatives are aimed at filling gaps where the main stream have limitations for specific metrology skills and learning. We have a very broad range of associated organisations, all with variations of technical competencies required to deliver your services. The current initiatives are aimed to support as much of that spectrum and will test whether these add value. Member feedback is always welcome as this helps to inform how we can continue to advocate in this space.
